First and foremost- DO NOT BUY one of the all-in-ones, like Norton or ZoneAlarm Suite. You DO NOT get the best of anything when you do that. For example, Norton is known for good antivirus (personally, I think its as good as any and it weighs your system WAY too much). But they are not known for antispyware, rootkits or firewall prowess. So why buy it? Because its easier? Your motivation should be protection, not ease of use. Any of the products below become easy once you use it for a short while. |

| Second- Turn off automatic updates... this is just my opinion. Often these updates create problems. My advice is to occasionally, create a restore point using your Restore software (this is a part of XP/Vista). Then, download the updates and install them all at once. When you let your machine update automatically, you can uninstall the update but you may still have problems. Using my method, (a) you do all the updates at once, setting aside time to fix anything thats broken and (b) you can restore your computer to just prior to the updates in case things go haywire. Using this method increases the importance of running a proper firewall, antivirus and so on. | ||
